About
Revered as the Shiksha Rishi (Sage of Education), Vitrag Swami Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj was a respected saint who dedicated his life to education, social service, and public welfare. Born in 1876 in Kotana village in the present-day Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh, he embraced the path of renunciation at an early age. In 1900, he received sannyas initiation from Swami Purnanand Ji at Muni Ki Reti, Rishikesh.
Throughout his life, Swami Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj worked to promote education, social welfare, and the preservation of Sanatan Dharma. His efforts supported the establishment and development of numerous educational and social service institutions, including schools, colleges, Sanskrit learning centres, gaushalas, and healthcare facilities. His significant contribution to education earned him the affectionate title of Shiksha Rishi.
On 12 November 1945, he began the restoration of the sacred site associated with Maharishi Shukdev Ji, and played an important role in developing Shri Shukdev Ashram at Shukteerth into a centre of spirituality, education, and public service. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 1982 and the Padma Bhushan in 2000.
Swami Kalyan Dev Ji Maharaj attained Brahmalin (samadhi) on 14 July 2004. Before that, he had entrusted the responsibility of carrying forward the ashram’s spiritual traditions and service activities to his chief disciple and successor, Swami Omanand Ji Maharaj. His enduring legacy of education, spiritual wisdom, and selfless service continues to inspire devotees and the wider community.
