What is a Name Number?
In name numerology every letter of a name carries a number. Adding them up gives the Name Number, which numerologists traditionally read as the energy a name carries in everyday life: how others see you and how your name "sounds" to the world.
This calculator uses the Chaldean system, the one most often used for name numerology in India. It is an interpretive tradition for personal reflection, not a prediction. For the Pythagorean method, see the Destiny Number Calculator.
The Chaldean letter table
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A I J Q Y | B K R | C G L S | D M T | E H N X | U V W | O Z | F P |
No letter is given the value 9.
How the Name Number is calculated
- Write the name in English letters. Spaces, dots and hyphens are ignored.
- Replace every letter with its value from the Chaldean table.
- Add all the values of the full name. This total is the compound number.
- Add the digits of the compound number until one digit is left. That digit is the Name Number.
Worked example: Rahul Sharma
RAHUL: R 2 + A 1 + H 5 + U 6 + L 3 = 17
SHARMA: S 3 + H 5 + A 1 + R 2 + M 4 + A 1 = 16
Compound number: 17 + 16 = 33, then 3 + 3 = 6. The Name Number is 6.
Does your Name Number suit your Mulank?
Your Mulank (Driver Number) comes from the day you were born. Traditionally each Mulank has friendly and less friendly numbers. The table below uses the lucky and less favourable dates from our Driver Number guides, reduced to single digits.
| Mulank | Favourable Name Numbers | Less favourable |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1, 4 | 8 |
| 2 | 1, 7 | 8 |
| 3 | 3, 9 | 6 |
| 4 | 1, 4, 9 | 7, 8 |
| 5 | 5, 9 | none in particular |
| 6 | 6, 9 | 3 |
| 7 | 2, 7 | 8 |
| 8 | 8 | 2 |
| 9 | 1, 5, 6, 7, 9 | 2 |
Numbers in neither column are treated as neutral.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Chaldean and Pythagorean name numerology?
They use different letter values. Chaldean numerology, the system most used in India, gives letters values from 1 to 8 based on their sound, and never uses 9. Pythagorean numerology gives letters 1 to 9 in alphabetical order. The same name can give different numbers in the two systems. For the Pythagorean method, use the Destiny Number Calculator.
Why does no letter have the value 9?
In the Chaldean tradition 9 is treated as a sacred number, so it is not given to any single letter. A name can still add up to 9, which is then its Name Number.
Which name should I enter?
Chaldean numerology traditionally uses the name you are known by and use every day, such as the name on your signature or business card, rather than only the name on your birth certificate. You can try several versions to compare them.
What if my Name Number is less favourable for my Mulank?
It is only a traditional association, not a prediction. Some people choose to adjust the spelling of a name after consulting a numerologist, but a less favourable match does not mean anything bad will happen.
Can I enter a name in Hindi?
Not yet. The Chaldean table is defined for the English (Latin) letters A to Z, so please type your name in English letters, the way you write it in English.
Is my name stored or sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser and the name you type is not uploaded or stored by HifiAstro.
